Rockwell Cage, a renovated United States Government airplane hangar, is named in honor of Dr. John Rockwell ’96. Rockwell Cage is home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams and men’s and women’s volleyball teams. The double sided gymnasium also features three badminton courts and five practice basketball hoops along with two practice courts. Rockwell Cage seats 1,000 spectators and features three student sections behind the south side hoop. The first step toward what is now the duPont Athletic Center was the acquisition of the Rockwell Cage which had been used by the United States Government for indoor drill. The cage was acquired largely through the efforts of then-Athletic Director Ivan J. Geiger, who was also instrumental in turning the facility into the new home for MIT basketball.
