Henry G. Steinbrenner ’27 Stadium and Roberts Field

Henry G. Steinbrenner ’27 Stadium was dedicated in 1978 by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and his two sisters and was rededicated in 2009 after the addition of a new entryway. The gift was made in honor of their father who won the national championship in 220-yard hurdles as an MIT undergraduate. In the summer of 2016, the Steinbrenner Stadium grandstands and the track and field facility were fully-renovated as part of a multi-million dollar renovation project of a number of MIT’s outdoor facilities. The grandstands were supported in part by the generosity of the families and alumni of men’s and women’s soccer. The new seating area in Steinbrenner increases the capacity by 200 to nearly 1,000 fans and includes ADA access to the bleachers by ramps and an elevator. The press box is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to allow for live streaming of events and coverage of the MIT athletic teams. The upgrade of the track and field facility has been made possible by a naming level gift from Sherie and Don Morrison `61 and will give the Engineers one of the top facilities in New England. With a Beynon BSS 2000 surface and a Hobart finish, this Olympic caliber system features a force reduction layer of butyl rubber and full-depth color Polyurethane that is finished with a customized surface texture engineered to meet the intense demands of competition. All of the facilities field competition areas were also fully resurfaced, along with upgrades of the wiring for the timing systems. Don Morrison was a 1961 graduate of the Institute and a member of the MIT track and field team from 1958-1961 as a long jumper. Within Steinbrenner Stadium is Bob and Eveline Roberts P’10 Field which was dedicated in October 2008. The venue features a new Field Turf artificial playing surface and lights. Roberts Field serves as the home for MIT’s football, men’s lacrosse, and both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
